GS1 DataMatrix, the symbol for direct part marking
The standard recommends GS1 DataMatrix (ECC 200 with FNC1) for direct part marking. Trainparts.online generates it as vector SVG, suitable for high-resolution label printing as well as laser engraving.
Encoding order follows GS1 rules: fixed-length application identifiers (AIs) first, and a separator only after variable-length AIs that are not in last position.
GS1 Digital Link QR Code
In addition, the platform produces a GS1 Digital Link QR Code: a standardised web address (for example /01/{GTIN}/21/{serial number}) that any smartphone can read, and that Trainparts.online resolves to the part record for authorised users.
Human-readable text: HRI and non-HRI
Under the symbol, the plain text follows the rules of the standard:
- HRI (Human Readable Interpretation): AIs in parentheses, which are not encoded in the symbol;
- non-HRI: the title of each AI written in full, for the maintenance operator.
What is encoded, and what is not
For a serialised part, the standard requires that changing attributes (functional status, revision, dates) are not encoded: they are exchanged digitally and linked to the serial number. Only the AI 240 and 241 required by some integrator specifications are added to the marking.
Reading marks in the field
The scan module reads symbols with a smartphone or tablet camera, or with a handheld scanner. It parses raw GS1 strings, HRI text and Digital Link addresses to find the part and its history immediately.
